Chain for Forklifts - The life of the forklift lift chains can actually be extended with correct care and maintenance. Lubricating properly is a great way in order to lengthen the capability of this lift truck part. It is really essential to apply oil periodically using a brush or other lube application device. The volume and frequency of oil application should be enough so as to avoid whatever rust discoloration of oil in the joints. This reddish brown discoloration generally signals that the lift chains have not been correctly lubricated. If this particular condition has happened, it is extremely important to lubricate the lift chains right away.

During lift chain operation it is common for some metal to metal contact to happen that can lead to several parts to wear out eventually. When there is three percent elongation on the lift chain, it is considered by industry standards to have worn out the chain. So as to prevent the scary possibility of a catastrophic lift chain failure from happening, the manufacturer greatly suggests that the lift chain be replaced before it reaches 3 percent elongation. The lift chain lengthens because of progressive joint wear which elongates the chain pitch. This elongation is capable of being measured by placing a certain number of pitches under tension.

In order to ensure proper lift chain maintenance, one more factor to think about is to check the clevis pins on the lift chain for signs of wearing. Lift chains are put together so that the clevis pins have their tapered faces lined up with each other. Usually, rotation of the clevis pins is frequently caused by shock loading. Shock loading happens if the chain is loose and then all of a sudden a load is applied. This causes the chain to go through a shock as it 'snaps' under the load tension. Without the good lubrication, in this particular situation, the pins can rotate in the chain's link. If this particular scenario happens, the lift chains must be replaced at once. It is vital to always replace the lift chains in pairs to ensure even wear.
